A FEW LINES OF STEEL, DRAWN IN THE AIR, HOLDING THE WEEKEND PAPERS.
A magazine holder by Mathieu Matégot, made in France around 1950. A frame of thin black steel rod crosses over itself like a quick sketch, cradling two triangular panels of perforated sheet metal.
Matégot was born in Hungary and settled in Paris, where he became known for his inventive use of materials, from rattan and metal to wood, leather, glass and Formica. His perforated metal pieces, and designs such as the Nagasaki chair, are now held in museum collections around the world.
Light enough to move with one finger, and sculptural enough to leave empty.
