A DUTCH SKY FROM 1665, PAINTED AGAIN ON 2 JULY 2020.
An abstract work by Scottish artist Philip Maltman, in oil paint and crayon on greyboard. Storm-grey cloud gathers over a band of ochre and umber, and long drips of paint run down into the pale field below.
The piece takes its cue from the 17th-century landscape painter Aelbert Cuyp and his painting of cattle, and from Maltman’s own childhood on a dairy farm in Ayrshire. The words CUYP SKY WITH COWS 1665 are written by hand across the lower half, and the work is initialled and dated 2 July 2020, which gives it its title.
Born in Ayrshire, on the coast of Scotland, Maltman is known for exploring the littoral zone: the stretch of shoreline where the sea meets the land.
Sold unframed, at 42 x 30 cm. Cows, sky and weather, in a few fast strokes.
