A BICYCLE, A PLUMBER AND THE BAUHAUS WALK INTO A CHAIR.

The Cesca Chair with arms, from The Breuer Collection by Knoll. A single run of chrome tubular steel bends down from the arms, along the floor and back up to hold the seat in mid-air, with cane seat and back set in black frames.

Marcel Breuer designed his first tubular steel furniture while at the Bauhaus, taking his cue from bicycle construction and having it made with the techniques of local plumbers. He married traditional craftsmanship with industrial materials, and the cantilevered frame makes the most of the steel, giving the chair a gentle spring and real comfort.

One of the most influential chairs of the modern movement, and still one of the easiest to live with.
