“Daylight is a material. Lamplight is a necessity.”
Where good design is simply how things are done, and has been for long enough that nobody mentions it. Letters From Copenhagen finds the workshops behind the chairs everyone owns copies of: cabinetmakers, upholsterers and the slow trades, interiors that treat daylight as a material, and architecture built for long winters. We visit Finn Juhl’s own house at Ordrupgaard, left exactly as he lived in it, where you can see a designer testing his own ideas on himself for forty years. Plus the hotels that get warmth right rather than minimalism, and a table or two worth booking weeks ahead.
Each edition carries the city’s palette, drawn here from Klint’s lamp paper and smoked oak; notes on sourcing from the cabinetmakers, and how long good work actually takes; and a letter to the city at the back.
